The following museums closeby are all well worth a visit.
Historylinks Museum, Dornoch
The museum received the prestigious VisitScotland 5 Star museum award in September 2009, the only such award in the Highlands. The award cited Historylinks very high quality of displays and the ability to engage the attention of visitors of all ages with a wide range of subjects in an excellent standard of interpretation.It has retained its 5 Star status. There is also an interesting Heritage Trail round Dornoch starting at the Museum.
Tain Through Time, Tain
The museum consists of (1) The Collegiate Church of St Duthac, one of the finest medieval buildings in the Highlands. Its atmospheric interior has many interesting features which help to unlock the story of its past. It was skilfully restored in the 19th century, when the stunning stained glass windows were installed. (2) The Pilgrimage, a modern visitor centre built in a 17th century schoolhouse in the churchyard. It tells the story of medieval pilgrimage to Tain in two colourful galleries using images and sound. (3) The Museum is home to an extensive and varied collection of objects, photographs and archives of local, regional and national significance.
Timespan Museum and Arts Centre, Helmsdale
Timespan Museum is the starting point on a journey through the colourful historical themes of the area. It provides the visitor with a wealth of information about past ways of life and some of the more turbulent events in Sutherland’s history. It combines local stories and folklore from the past and present with a multi-faceted collection of objects spanning thousands of years.
Timespan’s gallery is the first purpose-built visual and applied contemporary art gallery in Sutherland,the most Northerly on mainland Britain. It shows a diverse programme of local, national and international art and craft exhibitions.
