Good news for consumers!

New clear call telephone rates for consumers and businesses from July 2015

From 1 July, the cost of calling 08 and 09 numbers – as well as 118 directory enquiries – will be made up of an access and service charge, so callers can work out the exact cost before they dial.

On the same day, calls to Freephone (0800 and 0808) numbers will be become free from all consumer phones – including mobiles.  These changes are estimated to affect around a 175m telephone numbers, making this the biggest overhaul of phone calls in more than a decade. The changes are being communicated by Ofcom and phone companies, working together under the banner UK Calling.

In the next few weeks, consumers will be informed through adverts broadcast across major commercial radio stations, followed by newspaper adverts about how these changes will affect them.

Consumers will also receive leaflets from major landline and mobile phone providers about the changes to millions of customers who take a paper phone bill.

Information about these changes is important for people who enjoy interacting with their favourite shows, but also for everyone calling companies and organisations on 08, 09 and 118 numbers.

Consumers can also contact their phone company or contact the UK Calling website at: ukcalling.info for further information.

If consumers are concerned about their telephone provider or they have a telephone or billing problem as a result of these changes they can contact OFCOM Consumer Contact Team (Lines open 09:00 to 17:00 hrs, Monday to Friday) on 0300 123 3333.

Highland Council Trading Standards are also keen to hear from consumers who feel that they may have been conned into phoning a premium rate number or if they feel that they may have been misled about the costs of telephoning a business once the new charging rates are introduced.

Consumers can speak to an advisor from the Citizens Advice Consumer Service (frontline telephone consumer advice service) 03454 04 05 06 or visit or write to:  The Highland Council Trading Standards Service, 38 Harbour Road, Inverness IV1 1UF
